Henry, Terry favourites for Aston Villa job

Thierry Henry and John Terry are set to battle it out to become Aston Villa’s new manager.

Reports on Tuesday suggested that Villa had given up hope of tempting Brendan Rodgers to leave Celtic and that the club would now turn its attention to handing ex-Arsenal star Henry his first manager’s job.

Henry, who remains the odds-on favourite with the bookmakers, is currently assistant to Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, with the pair helping the Red Devils to third place at this summer’s World Cup.

Martinez has also been linked with the Villa position in recent days but it was Terry’s odds that were shortening on Tuesday morning.

The 37-year-old played for Villa last season but left in the summer and announced his retirement at the weekend.

It has been suggested that the pair could work together although, given neither has great experience in management, that would appear unlikely.

Terry is certainly expected to make a move into management and his former Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard has tipped him to succeed in such a role.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Lampard said: ‘He was a leader on and off the pitch and I think he will be a leader as a coach, as a manager, whatever he chooses to do and he wants to do well.

‘He is driven, he wants to learn about the game, he’s got so much experience and knowledge inside himself already.

‘For sure he’ll go into coaching and management and John is one of those people I think, and there are so many variables, will make it work because that’s the type of person he is professionally.’
