Katsina United penalised with N9m fine over fan violence

Katsina United has been penalised with a ₦9 million fine after a chaotic 1‑1 draw with Barau FC at Muhammadu Dikko Stadium on Saturday.

According to a statement from the NPFL, Katsina United failed to supply sufficient security at Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, which granted unauthorised entry for the people into restricted zones during the game. This breach allegedly sparked chaos and resulted in attacks on the visiting team and officials.

As a further sanction from NPFL, all Katsina United home matches will be moved to the New Jos Stadium and played behind closed doors until the league decides otherwise. The club has 48 hours to appeal the decision.

The league’s statement noted that Katsina United fans were convicted of hurling dangerous objects onto the field, which injured Barau FC players, and of harassing match officials and visiting‑team members, conduct the NPFL described as “capable of bringing the game into disrepute.”

The NPFL ordered Katsina United to host all future home games in Jos, Plateau State, behind closed doors, and fined the club ₦9 million. The penalties include ₦1 million each for throwing objects, failing to control fans, and bringing the game into disrepute, plus an extra ₦2 million for insufficient security.

According to reports, the club is also expected to pay ₦2 million each as compensation for the treatment of injured Barau FC players and the damages of the visiting team’s buses, as well as the absurd treatment of officials and for holding the away team hostage for several hours after the game.

The NPFL clarified that the claim of a throat‑slitting incident involving Barau FC’s Abraham Nana was false; the player was struck by an object thrown from the stands, received treatment on the field, and the match was briefly paused.

The league noted its active Situation Room, staffed by Match Commissioners, continuously monitors games to prevent disruptions.

The NPFL pledged to keep enforcing the regulations so the league remains fair and entertaining, and it assured that safety measures are in place to protect everyone at matches.
