Real Madrid topped the list in 2015, but United are now the most valuable football team.
NFL side Dallas Cowboys (£3.25billion) and Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees (£2.86bn) are the only sports outfits who outvalue the Red Devils.
Manchester United, who are rated at £2.85bn, have climbed from fifth to third in Forbes’ top 50 ranking, after an 11 per cent increase from their £2.57bn worth in 2016.
They have leapfrogged Barcelona (£2.81bn) and Real Madrid (£2.77bn), who stand at fourth and fifth respectivelly, and who make up the three fooball clubs in the top 10.
In total, only seven football teams make the top 50, after Liverpool dropped out of the list. Bayern Munich (15th, £2.09bn), Manchester City (35th, £1.61bn), Arsenal (43rd, £1.49bn) and Chelsea (46th, £1.43) make up the rest of football teams in a list dominated by Americans, specifically NFL sides.
