The highly-anticipated maiden edition of the Moor Plantation League kicked off on Tuesday, at the Recreational football field, Moor Plantation, Ibadan.
The four-week football tournament will see the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology (FCAH&PT) Ibadan, Federal College of Agriculture Ibadan (FCAI), and the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training Ibadan (IAR&T) competing for honours.
The competition is expected to end next month.
Present at the opening ceremony are the Executive Director, IAR&T, Professor Veronica Obatolu; Provost, FCAH&PT, Ibadan, Dr Adekoya Owosibo and Provost, FCA, Ibadan, Dr Elizabeth Augustus, among others.
In his remarks, the Sports Director of Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology (FCAH&PT), Dr Oladapo Agbato, explained the aims of the tournament is to bound, improve health, and camaraderie through sports among the competitors.
“Six teams were carefully crafted out of the community with each teams having players from the three institutions mixed together.
“We organised this league to foster unity, promote sportsmanship, and enhance the overall well-being of the staff of the institution.
“Asides from recreation, we can also identify talents that will be able to represent the institutions at the end of the day,” the sport director explained.
Agbato, however, encouraged participants to embrace the spirit of the league and work together towards a healthier and more united community and assured the flag of the league will continue to soar.
Representing the three institutions, Provost of FCAH&PT, Dr. Owosibo said the league will establish a cordial relationship among the staff of the institutions.
He said: “We realised that in the past, we were not so many and everybody knows everyone one-on-one.
“However, there has been more staff due to expansion of the institutions, and we do not really one another, which is not good, especially for security reasons and cases of emergency.
“We therefore, established this league to serve as a foundation for cordial relationship among the staff.'”
In the opening match, F.C Owosibo played a draw match; 1-1 against FC Obatola, while F.C Augustus played against F.C Abass resulting in a goalless match and F.C Doja triumphed F.C R.C Elebu with 3-1.
