Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu, has expressed doubts about the renewal of head coach Jose Peseiro’s contract by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Despite the team’s qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Peseiro has faced significant criticism.
Peseiro was appointed as the Eagles’ new coach on May 15, 2022, replacing Austin Eguavoen, who returned to his role as Technical Director at the federation. However, Peseiro’s record shows more losses than wins, with 5 defeats and 4 victories. Furthermore, the team is still not playing the attractive style of football that Nigerians desire, which was also a contributing factor to the departure of his predecessor, Gernot Rohr.

Speaking to Completesports.com, Shorunmu acknowledged Peseiro’s accomplishment in guiding the team to the Nations Cup but expressed skepticism about his ability to lead Nigeria to glory.

Despite Peseiro’s repeated claims that he will win the next AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, Shorunmu believes it may not come to fruition.
“There is no doubt that the Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro has done a good job by qualifying the team to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. However, that may not be enough to save his managerial job considering the fact that the team has not been playing impressive football.
“Besides, the game against Sierra Leone also exposed his tactical and technical ability to read the game and to make quality substitution that will have positive effect on the team.
“I have this feeling the NFF may have seen enough of him and may not want to extend his contract.”
