NPFL: ‘Grieving’ Onyema roots for Enyimba in memory of late father

Enyimba defender, Emeka Onyema, has pledged his support for the people’s elephant ahead of their NPFL clash with Nasarawa United, dedicating his loyalty to the memory of his late father.

Onyema, who joined Enyimba from Nasarawa United last season, is currently mourning the loss of his father and will not be part of the squad for Sunday’s Matchday 3 encounter in Aba.

Despite his absence, the towering centre back said his spirit will be with his teammates.

“Nasarawa is my former club and I know them very well, but I’m optimistic Enyimba will continue our good form on Sunday. The camp is bubbling in high spirits, both old and new players are determined to achieve a glorious season.

“Although I won’t be in the squad for the game, my spirit is with them. I want my teammates to get the maximum points and help settle the spirit of my late father, who went to be with his creator recently,” Onyema said.

The fixture presents an emotional twist for Onyema, who will watch his new club face his former side for the first time. He described the clash as more than just another league match, but also a test of loyalty and remembrance.

Enyimba head into the game with history on their side, having claimed 11 wins and six draws in 22 previous meetings against the Solid Miners. With Stanley Eguma’s men looking to secure back-to-back home victories, Aba fans are expected to turn up in large numbers to cheer their team.

For Onyema, however, the game transcends the statistics. As Enyimba file out on Sunday, they will do so with the mission of victory, and with the silent prayers of a grieving player who longs to dedicate three points to his late father.
