Osimhen in Covid-19 scare

Nigerian international, Victor Osimhen, may end up in quarantine following 14 positive tests among players and staff of Serie A side, Genoa.

Osimhen played for Napoli against Genoa last weekend and according to Italy’s COVID-19 procedures he, along his teammates, has to self-isolate until he returns negative tests.

The former FIFA U-17 champion made his first start to life in Naples in the home game won by his side by 6-0 and won plaudits from manager, Gennaro Gattuso.

”Osimhen? When he attacks the depth we find spaces, we missed a player like that last season, we have a valid alternative this year,”Gattuso told Radio Rai 1 after the game.

Reports added that Serie A could be suspended for two weeks due to Genoa’s case.

Osimhen’s desire to go head-to-head against Cristiano Ronaldo in weekend’s Napoli-Juventus thriller risks jeorpardy as the Italian government and ministry of sport are working together to decide how best to combat any clusters of the virus in Serie A.

There were 159 new cases of coronavirus in Italy on August 3 – the day after the last season ended – and by last Sunday there were 1,766.

Meanwhile, 10 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the latest round of testing conducted by the Premier League – the highest number of positive tests since the season began.

A total of 1,595 players and club staff were tested for Covid-19 between September 21 and 27.

Those who have tested positive – who have not been identified – will now isolate for 10 days.

The Premier League carries out weekly testing of staff at all 20 clubs.
