Over 400 golfers are set to compete at the maiden Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club (TYB-IGRCC) Independence Day Golf Tournament to mark Nigeria’s 65th anniversary celebration and to honour both retired and serving officers of the Nigerian Army.
The Chairman, Local Organising Committee (LOC), Dr James Agbonhese, during a press conference held on Thursday in Abuja, said the tournament aims to promote unity, camaraderie and national pride among the participants.
“This is more than a sporting competition. It is a reflection of our national values: unity, perseverance, discipline and excellence,” the LOC chairman said.
He added that the event would also feature the commissioning of key infrastructural projects within the golf resort, including: a midway hut built by Chief Samuel Ayanmele, a modern golf practice range, a back 9 starter shed built by Brigadier General D.M. Onoyiveta (rtd) and a new Golf Cart Bay.
Agbonhese, however, expressed gratitude to the Grand Patron of the tournament, Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, for his unwavering support for the club and the event.
In his own remarks, the club captain, Major General Samson Jiya, who was represented by the vice chairman of the club, Dr Ali Peters, described the tournament as a symbolic tribute to the military’s role in safeguarding national unity.
“As we celebrate, we must reflect on the legacy of our founding fathers and the sacrifices that brought us this far. These projects will significantly improve the golfing experience for members and visitors alike. They reflect the club’s steady growth and commitment to providing world-class facilities,” Peters stated.
A member of the LOC, Jummai Adamu, said women would feature prominently in this year’s tournament.
She said, “We are expecting over 100 female golfers, including three professionals. The high turnout of women shows golf is gaining ground among female athletes in Nigeria.”
According to the tournament manager, Commodore Shola Adebayo (rtd), the event will deliver a memorable experience for players and guests.
“The tournament will feature daily games, networking sessions and cultural showcases.
“It’s set to deliver not just top-level golf but an unforgettable experience for everyone involved,” Adebayo said.
Sporting Tribune reports that the tournament will tee off on Saturday, 27th September and run through Wednesday, 1st October, 2025.
Dignitaries expected at the event include the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Mr Oluwatosin Ajayi, who will perform the ceremonial tee-off, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. O.O. Oluyede, Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General Emmanuel Undiandeye, serving and retired senior military officers, very important dignitaries, civilians and diplomats.
