Roma boss Ranieri targets Drinkwater reunion

Roma boss Claudio Ranieri is keen to land Danny Drinkwater from Chelsea in the summer, according to a report from Calciomercato.

The Italian took over at the Serie A club last week following the dismissal of Eusebio Di Francesco and appears to be already making plans for next season.

Drinkwater has been frozen out by Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea, and his future at Stamford Bridge seems rather bleak, indicating that a summer transfer could be on the cards.

The English international has seen all of Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley preferred to him throughout the season.

However, an escape route from London could present itself in the summer transfer window, with Calciomercato claiming that Ranieri is keen to reunite with his former midfielder.

The ex-Fulham manager worked with the player during his spell at Leicester, where Drinkwater helped the team stun the footballing world to win the Premier League title in the 2015/16 campaign.

Calciomercato reports that Ranieri regards Drinkwater as a potential backup for Daniele De Rossi.
