Serena slapped with $10,000 fine after damaging Wimbledon court

Serena Williams was handed a $10,000 (£8,000) fine for damaging one of the courts used at Wimbledon with her racquet ahead of The Championships.

The American great committed the offence on the Sunday ahead of the tournament beginning but organisers have only now punished her.

It’s unclear which court was damaged by the 23-time Grand Slam champion, although it’s understood that it was neither Centre Court nor Court 1.

It was, however, one of the courts in use during the tournament, rather than one of the practice courts in Aorangi Park.

In the grand scheme of things the fine will be of little concern to the 37-year-old, who has pocketed a guaranteed £294,000 for reaching the quarter-finals.

She has been in fine form during the grass-court Grand Slam, showing few signs of anger on court.

Williams will take on compatriot Alison Riske in Tuesday’s quarter-finals, while she will later team up with Britain’s Andy Murray in the mixed doubles.

She was more than satisfied with her peformance against Carla Suarez Navarro in a 6-2 6-2 win on Court One on Manic Monday.

“I definitely feel like I’m getting better and better day by day,” she said. “But, you know, every match is still super hard. Like even today I won a lot of points. It wasn’t like your average 6-2, 6-2 score. Wasn’t too many 40-Love games at all actually.

“I think everyone is also getting better. As the tournament goes on, that’s when the better players are surviving.”
