WAFCON: Reps hail Super Falcons’ quarter finals berth

The House of Representatives Committee on Sports has commended the Super Falcons for their impressive start at the ongoing 2025 African Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where they became the first team to secure a place in the round of 8. Nigeria is in group B alongside Tunisia, Botswana and Algeria.

The Coach Justin Madugu-led team started their campaign with a resounding 3-0 win over Tunisia, followed by an energy-sapping 1-0 victory against Botswana on Thursday.

With the wins from two matches, the nine-time African champions booked their place in the last eight of the competition.

Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Honourable Kabiru Amadu, while reacting to the team’s qualification, expressed confidence in the girls’ ability to reclaim the title, declaring the country’s support for the squad.

“Slowly but surely, the best team in Africa is progressing toward winning a tenth continental title. Winning their first two matches in dominant fashion shows their seriousness and capability. The Super Falcons are clearly focused on reclaiming their crown.

“The Federal Government, the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation and over 180 million Nigerians are fully behind the team. We are confident they can go all the way to the final and lift the trophy after a seven-year wait,” Amadu said.

The Falcons are scheduled to play their final group stage match against Algeria on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
