President Bola Tinubu has revealed that he deliberately avoided watching the 2024 WAFCON final live to prevent his blood pressure from spiking, admitting that the tension of the match was simply too much for him.
Speaking at the Presidential Villa during a reception held in honour of the Super Falcons after their victory, the president shared a mix of humor and admiration as he recounted the experience.
“Honestly, I didn’t want to watch the match,” Tinubu said. “I didn’t want to have high blood pressure.”
He explained that he tried to keep away from the screen but was drawn in once the match started. “But they turned on the television. When it was 2-0, I got offended and restless,” he added, sparking laughter in the audience.
Tinubu also shared a lighthearted moment about the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and how even she couldn’t resist the thrill of the final.
“You almost made me angrier because your mother, the First Lady, was in the kitchen, nearly abandoning my dinner,” he joked. “She doesn’t watch football – except when the girls are playing. And at the final whistle, it was joy all over the country.”
He had earlier said, “My wife was cooking in the kitchen, and she rushed out to tell me we had won.”
The Super Falcons defeated Morocco to clinch their 10th WAFCON title, reinforcing their dominance in African women’s football and bringing immense pride to the nation.
President Tinubu praised the team for their determination and unity, calling their victory “a triumph of hope, courage, and national pride.”
“You gave us joy, not heartbreak,” he told the players and technical crew. “You inspired millions, especially young girls, who now know that their dreams are valid.”
