Why Tottenham Hotspur no longer want to be called ‘Tottenham’

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly asked TV companies not to call them “Tottenham” on air.

The broadcasters have been referring to the north Londoners by that name for decades.

However in an email to the broadcasters, details of which have been made public by The Athletic, the club have requested to be referred to by their full name.

They stated: “Tottenham Hotspur have provided clarification regarding the club’s name. They have requested that the club be primarily known as Tottenham Hotspur, with Spurs being the preferred short version. The club have requested that they are not referred to as Tottenham.”

Not being called “Tottenham” has been their official stance since 2011. But they wanted to remind the TV companies of it following the remastering of their brand identity after Christmas.

The club aims to increase the global presence of the Tottenham Hotspur brand, and so they want to be referred to either by their full name or just “Spurs”.

Whatever the broadcasters choose to call them, the most important thing for fans will be to see their club name much higher in the Premier League table.

The Lilwhites picked up a morale-boosting victory over Manchester United last weekend, thanks to James Maddison’s 13th-minute winner.

However, their overall performances have been far from convincing this campaign, as they are currently sitting 12th in the league standings.

Injuries have been one of the biggest issues for Ange Postecolou’s side, with Richarlison, Dominic Solanke, Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Radu Dragusin all sidelined with long-term fitness problems.

Tottenham have also been eliminated from the FA Cup and EFL Cup, which means the Europa League remains their only hope for silverware this season.
