As part of efforts to rekindle youth football in Nigeria, six male footballers have been invited to the Youth Sports Federation of Nigeria (YSFON) under-20 national camp from the just concluded Nimrod Musa under-20 tournament in Hong, Adamawa state.
Technical director of YSFON, Abdulgafa Agbola who was the head of the technical team that watched the matches disclosed this in an interview after the final match of the sixth edition of Engineer Nimrod Musa YSFON under-20 football tournament on Sunday.
Agbola who commended the sponsor for making sure the tournament is held every six years noted that more than eight players have so far made it from the age group competition and are making waves in their various clubs.
He said, “These players were selected from the tournaments sponsored by Engineer Nimrod, I am very sure if we have ten people who can give back to the society like Nimrod Musa, Nigeria youths will be better off.
“I call on well-meaning Nigerians, cooperate organizations to come and support sports, government alone can not do it.”
Also speaking to journalists after the match, the chairman of the Hong local government area, Usman Wa’agnda congratulated the champions for a well-deserved victory and urged them not to relent on their performance as they go to represent the council.
Represented by his chief of staff, Alhaji Ali Nura, the council boss commended the sponsor of the tournament, Nimrod Musa for giving youths in the local government area, the state and the nation at large the opportunity to excel in their chosen careers, particularly in sports and education.
He said, “I must thank him immensely for the great services he has been rendering, I hope we emulate him.”
This year’s edition, the sixth in the series, had eight teams from the Hong local government area competing.
At the end of the one-week tournament, Sheigui Ward Football Club went home with the converted giant trophy and a cash price of N200,000 as well as gold medals after defeating Theilba Ward Football Club 4-2 via penalty after the game ended one apiece.
The second-placed team Theilba FC went home with the silver medal and a cash price of N150,000 while the third and fourth, Hong and Garaha football clubs went home with N100,000 and N50,000 respectively.
