Nigeria on Friday clinched four more gold medals at the ongoing 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia, to move to the eighth position on the medals’ table with eight gold, five silver and five bronze medals.
Blessing Oborududu engineered the golden day for Team Nigeria at the Carrara Sports Arena, as she outpowered Canadian Daniella Lappage 3-1 in the final of the women’s 68kg wrestling for her first gold in the Commonwealth Games.
Another wrestler, Odunayo Adekuroye retained the title she won four years ago in Glasgow as she subdued her Indian opponent, Pooja Dhunda 7-5 in a keenly contested 57kg freestyle final.
Reigning All Africa Games gold medallist, Oluwatobilola Amusan made it a golden finish in the 100m women’s hurdles to add to Team Nigeria’s gold medals.
Amusan finished in a time of 12.58 seconds ahead of two Jamaicans, Danielle Williams who clinched the silver with a time of 12.68 seconds and Yanique Thompson with a time 12.97 seconds to claim the bronze.
The Rio 2016 Olympian, Amusan, had earlier won the round 1 – heat 1 in a time of 12.73 seconds.
Suwaibidu Galadima, a para athlete, completed the golden day for Nigeria as he finished the T47 100m in a time 11:04secs ahead of other competitors.
Also on Friday, Team Nigeria clinched two more bronze medals through the 4x100m men’s relay team which returned in a time 38:52secs and wrestler Amos Daniel who beat Canadian Vincent De Marinis to the bronze in the men’s 65kg freestyle.
Meanwhile, South Africa which place fifth on the table remain Africa’s best team at Gold Coast 2018 so far with 13 gold, 10 silver and 12 bronze medals, as Nigeria place second.
