Ex-Eagles defender Andrew Uwe returns to Nigeria, gets Vandrezzer academy job

Former Nigeria international Andrew Uwe has been appointed head coach of Vandrezzer football academy based in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Until his new appointment, Uwe, captain of the Nigeria team to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in USSR in 1985, was the coach of the German sixth tier clubside, BV Essen.

The former Leventis United FC of Ibadan defender took charge of BV Essen six months ago when he was signed in a one-year deal.

Speaking to Tribunesport on Saturday, Uwe said as the head coach of Vandrezzer academy, he will also be assisting the coach of Vandrezzer FC. The club currently play in the Nigeria National League (NNL).

He added that he will be working with a consortium of coaches at the academy, and among these is former junior international, Patrick Udoh. Udoh was Nigeria’s second choice goalkeeper to the 1983 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Mexico, after Wilfred Agbonavbare.

Uwe, a member of the Green Eagles team to the 1988 African Cup of Nations in Morocco and the Olympic Games, also later that year in Seoul, South Korea, is already in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, to assume duties.

“I just did my COVID test [having just returned to the country to determine his status] and I just want to hit the ground running,” the former VfB Oldenburg of Germany player told Tribunesport by phone.
