The ancient city of Kano is now agog as the Northern Zone Ladies Open Golf Championship under the supervision of the Ladies Golfers Association of Nigeria (LGAN), teed off on Wednesday at the Kano Golf Club.
The five-day tournament will see lady golfers across the country converge on Kano for the tournament which has its theme as: ‘Uniting and fostering peace through golf’.
The Ladies Professional (Ladies & Invited Men) began their campaign on Wednesday while Handicap 29-36 (Kano Ladies only) are expected to begin their campaign today.
Also, participants’ arrival will commence with the registration while a cocktail party will also hold later today.
The tournament proper will tee off tomorrow morning from Ladies 0-28 Handicap.
On Saturday Ladies 0-28 Handicap, Men 0-28 Handicap and special guests/sponsors will all slog it out for different prizes.
The qualifier from both Ladies and Men from 0-28 Handicap will played on Sunday while the presentation of prizes as well as dinner will hold by 5pm the same day.
Speaking, first Vice President of LGAN, Dr Lami Onayi Ahmed, promised a hitch-free tournament, just as she said everything is on the ground to make the tournament a memorable one.
She disclosed that Kano Golf Club was chosen in order to give Northern lady golfers variety of courses.
“We are hosting the LGAN Northern Zone Ladies Open championship.
Hosting tournament like this is very important because as a golfers, we normally compete among ourselves during competition like this to attest your skills and also build relationships, in essence, You can’t be a golfer without a competition.
“Participating in tournaments helps you to improve on your handicap, the better you play, the lower handicap be awarded to you,” she said.
“With this year’s theme, Uniting and fostering peace through golf, it is important to put on record, one of the very important games in the world that can truly foster unity and peace is the game of golf.
“This is one game that only your skill and your skill alone dictate and determine what you can do, even though you are playing along with other players but the competition is just between yourself, your best come out and you are rated along with others.”
