Over 300 golfers set for Ibadan Open Golf

Captain, Ibadan Golf Club (IGC), Seyi Alaba, has revealed that the Ibadan Open Golf Championship 2025 was conceived to revive the prestige of IGC as a hub for golfers from across Nigeria and beyond.

The Ibadan Open,, which is scheduled to kick off today, will run until November 16.

“It’s really exciting to see the level of interest this year. The responses from golfers across the country have been massive. We opened entries on October 1st, and within 24 hours, we were oversubscribed.

“Initially, we planned to accommodate 200 players, but before we knew it, over 250 had subscribed. By the time we closed entries yesterday, we had well over 300 entries,” Alaba said at a press conference on Tuesday.

To effectively manage the large turnout, the organising committee has devised a structure that splits the qualifying rounds over two days, with a final stage on the third day.

“Our course can comfortably take 150 players at once, so we’ve decided to split the qualifiers. Instead of everyone playing on Saturday, we’ll have qualifying rounds on Friday and Saturday, and those who meet the cut-off will play in the final on Sunday,” Alaba added.

Two sponsors present at the briefing, Uche Henry from Pop Cola and Maryam Adediran representing THP (The Honda Place), Honda Automobile West Africa, expressed satisfaction with their partnership, noting that the event would enhance their brands’ visibility and engagement.

According to Alaba, an estimated 30 professional golfers are expected to participate in the championship.

He also highlighted several side attractions lined up for the three-day event: Friday: Ibadan Night — featuring traditional attire and local delicacies, while we named Saturday Governor Seyi Makinde Night — themed “Old School,” with classic highlife and retro music.

Sunday, a celebration in honour of the new Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, alongside the tournament winners.

Alaba affirmed that the 2025 edition aims not just to promote the sport but also to reestablish Ibadan as a major golfing destination in Nigeria.

Present at the briefing include the Competition Secretary, Bunmi Oladimeji, Secretary Prince Adekunle Akinpelu and Club Treasurer, Mike Babalola, among others.
