Why Pep Guardiola cut off wi-fi at Manchester City training base

  • Aguero says a team-mate was caught on his phone while having a massage

Pep Guardiola’s decision to cut off wi-fi inside Manchester City’s training ground is thought to have come after one player was caught on his phone while having a massage.

Guardiola made the adjustment to foster team spirit, hoping his squad would concentrate on communicating with each other rather than being glued to their mobiles at the City Football Academy.

There is also limited 3G reception inside the training ground and striker Sergio Aguero has revealed that the unorthodox move was in response to something the manager had seen.

‘In this place I am preparing the orange juice, and they (team-mates) were asking if the internet was working. “I think it’s broken,” I said. I thought they were messing with me, but it was right.

‘It seems that one time, he entered the massage rooms and saw one of my team-mates, I don’t know who it was, relaxing with his phone and, I don’t know, maybe he did not like it.

‘He had cut the internet. In the changing room, massage room and pool we don’t have the internet. Upstairs there is a little bit of 3G.’

Mood in the City camp is high after their storming start to this season under Guardiola, with 10 consecutive wins in all competitions before last week’s defeat at Tottenham.

The Catalan chooses to talk almost exclusively in English to the players, who are encouraged to do similar with each other.

New signings, such as Nolito, are spoken to in Spanish as they get to grips with the language, while players eat breakfast and lunch together daily at their training base.

They are also enjoying meals as a group following home matches at the Etihad Stadium after a larger players’ lounge was built over the summer.

That will be in use this weekend after their Premier League clash with Everton, a fixture which could see Kevin De Bruyne in after injury.

De Bruyne is progressing well following a hamstring problem sustained at Swansea City and may be fit enough for a place on the bench when Ronald Koeman’s side visit on Saturday.

The Belgian, a standout performer with Aguero so far, should certainly be ready for next week’s Champions League trip to Barcelona.
