Rangers one game away from ending 32-year title jinx

• Remo Stars promoted to NPFL

RANGERS International FC of Enugu on Sunday are just one game to clinching the 2016 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title after beating home team, Ikorodu FC of Lagos by 2-1 at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta in a Week 35 duel.

With the win, Rangers gathered 60 points as closest challenger, Rivers United after playing goalless draw against Abia Warriors, in Port Harcourt are on 57 points.

However, Rangers will have to lose by 4-0 to El-Kanemi Warriors in their last home game while Rivers travel to Uyo to claim a famous away win over Akwa United on the final day to wrest the title from the Flying Antelopes .

Tribunesport recalls that Rangers last won any national title in 1984 beating the Shooting Stars and the defunct New Nigeria Bank to the year’s League title.

In Ibadan, the Shooting Stars ensured safety after beating Wikki Tourists by a lone goal scored by Olabisi Samuel in the 52nd minute but the home fans were scared stiff by an Ibrahim Hassan’s effort which rattled the Shooting Stars post in the 23rd minute.

“This is the toughest game of our campaign, it was a make-or-mar,” said Shooting Stars Team Manager, Dimeji Lawal. However, Wikki Tourists captain, Festus Nmana felt disappointed by officiating.

Meanwhile, Remo Stars on Saturday won promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) cadre after beating City of David 2-0 in a Division B1 game decided in Ijebu Ode.
