The Rotary Club of Abuja-Aso Golf (RCAAG) over the weekend held a special mini golf tournament to commemorate World Polio Day and support global efforts to keep polio at zero level.
The event, which took place at the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club (TYBIGRCC) in Abuja, was attended by prominent Nigerians and rotarians committed to ending polio in Nigeria.
President of RCAAG, Liz Ulumaranma, said the initiative is aimed at driving awareness and funding for polio eradication, the reason it was tagged “Swing to keep polio @ zero.”
“It’s an opportunity to create awareness in the golfing community so that golfers can support this noble cause. No child deserves to be infected with polio. Every child’s life matters. Together, we will Keep Polio @ Zero in Nigeria.
“Every swing today counts toward a polio-free world. This is more than a game. It’s a statement that we are committed to ending polio in our lifetime. Nigeria was certified polio-free in 2020, but the battle is not over. We must remain vigilant to keep polio at zero,” Ulumaranma.
District Governor, Dame Joy Okoro, commended Ulumaranma for using golf as a tool for advocacy to keep polio away.
“Rotary has played a historic role in the global fight against polio. Events like this remind us that the mission continues,” she said.
A former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Umana Umana, also commended the team and stressed the importance of continued vaccination and international support.
Rotary International and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) have helped reduce polio cases by over 99 per cent worldwide. The event ended with a ceremonial swing, symbolic of Rotary’s commitment “to keep polio @ zero.”
