Real Madrid target David De Gea has £52m release clause in his Manchester United contract

Manchester United star David De Gea could join Real Madrid if the La Liga giants meet a £52million release clause in the goalkeeper’s contract, according to reports in Spain.

The 26-year-old joined United in 2011 and had agreed to move to the Bernabeu in 2015 but saw his move to Madrid collapse at the last moment.

De Gea responded to the news by signing a new four-year deal with the Red Devils until 2019 but United have failed to make the Champions League in two of the last three seasons.

Jose Mourinho persuaded De Gea to stay when he was appointed last summer but Marca claim that the goalkeeper had a £52m release clause installed into his contract.

While that fee would represent a world record for a goalkeeper, United would be losing their player of the year in each of the last three seasons.

Marca claim that Madrid are likely to move for the Spaniard in 2018 when De Gea would be 28.
