World Cup qualifiers: Zimbabwe holds Super Eagles to draw in Uyo

Nigeria’s hopes of securing a direct spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup took a hit after a late equalizer from Zimbabwe saw the match end 1-1 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

The Super Eagles had looked set for victory after Victor Osimhen broke the deadlock in the second half, but a last-minute goal from Taranda Chirewa denied them all three points.

Nigeria entered the game aiming to build on their win against Rwanda and strengthen their position in Group C.

With only the top team guaranteed a place at the World Cup, a victory was crucial.

However, despite controlling much of the game, they failed to hold onto their lead.

The first half saw Nigeria dominate possession, creating multiple chances but struggling to convert them. Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze came close, but Zimbabwe’s defense held firm.

Alex Iwobi had the best chance of the opening period but failed to capitalize from close range.

After the break, Nigeria intensified their attacks, and their persistence paid off in the 74th minute.

A well-placed cross from Ola Aina found Osimhen, who nodded the ball into the net, sending the home crowd into celebration.

Nigeria appeared to be on their way to a crucial win, but Zimbabwe had other plans. In the 90th minute, Chirewa capitalized on a lapse in Nigeria’s midfield, slipping past William Troost-Ekong to beat goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
